2022 Election Information

  The filing deadlines have passed for candidates and write-in candidates. The City Secretary received one application each for mayor and the four councilmember positions resulting in an uncontested election. The Election Code provides for the authority of the governing body to cancel an election if the candidates in each race are unopposed. On Tuesday, March 1, the City Council approved Ordinance Number 22-004 (PDF) canceling the May 7, 2022 General Election and declaring the unopposed candidates for mayor and councilmember elected.

City Council Composition

The City has five elected positions. By City Charter, the mayor and all four councilmembers serve two year terms. All five positions are at-large seats with each elected official serving the city as a whole. City elections are held every two years on the first Saturday in May in accordance with the Texas Election Code.

Mayor

The Mayor is elected separately from the Council, so candidates for Mayor do not run against candidates for the council seats. The Mayoral office limits successive terms of service to three terms, the equivalent of six years of continuous service. The person elected Mayor presides over all meetings of the City Council. The Mayor has a vote on all matters coming before the Council unless otherwise disqualified and is the official head of the City government.

Council

Every two years, all four council seats are open for election. No Councilmember may serve for more than three successive terms, the equivalent of six years of continuous service. Councilmembers are expected to attend regular Council Meetings and to serve as liaisons to various advisory committees. Each Councilmember has an equal vote on all action taken by the Council.

Qualifications for Candidacy

• Candidate must be a qualified (registered) voter of the City
• Candidate shall not be less than twenty-one (21) years of age
• Candidate shall have resided in the City not less than twelve (12) months immediately preceding election day
• Candidate shall meet the requirements of the Texas Election Code
• Candidate shall not, after notice of any delinquency, be in arrears in the payment of any taxes or any other liabilities due the City

Each Councilmember and the Mayor must continually reside within the City during the term of office, and any removal of residence from the City during the term shall constitute a vacation of the office.
