Overview

Coffee Park, located at 3400 Northwest Parkway, was purchased from H. E Yarbrough on April 6, 1953. Originally it was named Northcrest Park, a reference to the park's location at Northwest Parkway and Hillcrest Avenue. In 1979, the park was rededicated in memory of Roy C. Coffee Sr., University Park's longest-tenured mayor. Mayor Coffee served as a City Commissioner from 1949 to 1950 and as mayor from 1950 to 1970.

Extensively renovated in 2009, park improvements include a trail system with dioramas depicting the history of University Park, new picnic facilities, athletic field improvements, park entrance signage, decorative fencing, expanded acreage on the park's northern edge (made possible because of the Northwest Parkway Wall) and a barrier-free playground to provide fun for children of all ages and abilities. On the northwest corner of the park is a statue that depicts a young Roy Coffee heading home from the fields after a day's work. The piece is entitled, "Waterin' the Work Mules."

Murzin Playground at Coffee Park

Following a recommendation from the City’s Public Naming Committee and City Council approval, in October 2022, the park’s playground was named honoring the late Chris Murzin and his family. In 2006, the family moved into a home not far from Coffee Park. Chris, the father of a disabled son and a former board member for United Cerebral Palsy in Houston, was committed to improving the lives of those who are disabled. He contacted City leaders about converting the park’s public playground into a barrier-free facility so it could be used and enjoyed by everyone regardless of their age or mobility. Chris led neighborhood fundraising efforts to support costs associated with the project. In 2008, he was named UP Citizen of the Year for spearheading the push for inclusive public playgrounds. In 2009, the playground in Coffee Park became the first of eight City park playgrounds to feature a special rubberized play surface and uncontested pathways to all play equipment. In honor of Chris, a plaque was installed at the entrance of the playground.
